Tor Browser for iOS: the honest answer first.

Looking for “Tor Browser iOS” usually means you need a trustworthy way to use Tor on an iPhone or iPad. The product name, the App Store, and the privacy level are three different questions.

Read Tor Project’s iOS guidance

Tabbit is a separate AI work browser for macOS and Windows. It does not provide Tor routing, anonymity, or an iOS app.

Choose by the job

Three routes, three different promises.

Use the first route that matches your goal. A familiar browser name does not mean the same network or privacy model.

01 / FULL TOR01

You need Tor Browser itself

Use the official Tor Project download on Android, Windows, macOS, or Linux. Those are the platforms listed by the current support page.

You need Tor on an iPhone

Tor Project currently points iOS users to Onion Browser. Verify the app source and remember that iOS WebKit limits how closely it can match Tor Browser.

03 / AI WORK03

You need an AI browser for work

Tabbit is for research, writing, and repeatable web tasks on macOS and Windows. It is not a Tor client and does not make anonymity claims.

The source of truth

The “no iOS app” answer comes from Tor Project support.

The current installation article lists Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, then gives iOS its own section. The wording matters: a recommendation for an iOS app is not the same as an official Tor Browser release.

01

OFFICIAL LIST

The page says Tor Browser is available for Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

02

IOS ANSWER

Its iOS section says there is no Tor Browser for iOS and names Onion Browser as the recommended app.

03

IMPORTANT CAVEAT

The same section says Apple’s WebKit requirement prevents Onion Browser from having the same protections as Tor Browser.

The iPhone option

Onion Browser is the recommendation—not a rebranded Tor Browser.

Onion Browser’s own site describes it as an open-source iOS browser and a connection to the Tor network. That makes it the clearest iPhone path in the official guidance, while its separate project status should stay visible.

1

WHAT IT DOES

Connects an iOS browser to Tor

The project presents Tor-routed browsing, private sessions, and an App Store distribution path for iPhone and iPad users.

2

WHO MAKES IT

A separate open-source project

Tor Project support recommends it, but the app is not branded or shipped as Tor Browser by Tor Project. Check the developer and source before installing.

3

WHAT IT CANNOT PROMISE

Not the full desktop protection set

WebKit and iOS API limits mean its controls and privacy protections do not map one-for-one to Tor Browser on desktop or Android.

Safe wording: “Onion Browser is the iOS app recommended by Tor Project.” Unsafe wording: “Onion Browser is the official Tor Browser for iPhone.”

Why the difference exists

WebKit is the platform constraint you should not skip.

Apple’s current developer documentation describes an EU-only entitlement path for alternative browser engines. Outside that narrowly defined path, iOS browsers use WebKit; even the EU exception does not mean Tor Browser is available.

1

WEBKIT

Third-party browsers normally share the system engine

The current Tor guidance says Apple requires iOS browsers to use WebKit. That separates Onion Browser’s implementation from Tor Browser’s Firefox-based desktop and Android stack.

2

PROTECTION GAP

Some Tor Browser controls cannot be reproduced

Engine and API constraints affect rendering control, security-level behavior, and how traffic-handling features can be implemented. Do not promise identical anonymity.

3

EU EXCEPTION

Alternative engines require Apple approval

Apple says iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 18 support authorized alternative engines for EU users, with app-distribution, testing, security, privacy, and update requirements. This is not proof of a Tor iOS app.

Where Tor Browser is actually available

The official download map has four platforms.

The Tor Project download page currently shows Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. If a listing uses “Tor Browser” in an iOS name, compare it with this official platform map before you trust it.

Windows

Official Tor Browser

Use the Tor Project package and current installation instructions.

macOS

Official Tor Browser

Use the current macOS package and verify it when your risk model calls for it.

Linux

Official Tor Browser

Follow the distribution and signature guidance in Tor Project support.

Android

Official Tor Browser

Tor Project lists Android and points users to its current store and download paths.

iPhone / iPad

No official Tor Browser app

Tor Project’s current support page recommends Onion Browser, with the WebKit limitation above.

The desktop work path

Tabbit is a different tool for a different job.

When the goal is research, writing, or repeatable web work on a computer, Tabbit brings AI assistance into a desktop browser workflow. That is separate from Tor routing and iOS privacy software.

Tabbit currently supports macOS and Windows. It has no iOS app, does not route traffic through Tor, and does not claim anonymity. Use the download CTA only when this documented desktop use case fits your task.

Side by side

Tor Browser, Onion Browser, and Tabbit solve different problems.

A clear comparison prevents a privacy tool, an iOS workaround, and an AI productivity browser from being treated as interchangeable.

FAQ

Tor Browser iOS questions, answered without guesswork.

Is there an official Tor Browser for iPhone or iPad?+

No. Tor Project’s current installation support page says there is no Tor Browser for iOS. It recommends Onion Browser as an iOS app that connects to Tor.

Is Onion Browser made by the Tor Project?+

No. Onion Browser is an independent open-source iOS project. Tor Project recommends it for iOS, but that recommendation does not make it the official Tor Browser app.

Where can I download Tor Browser safely?+

Use the Tor Project download page at torproject.org. The current page offers downloads for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android; it does not offer an iOS Tor Browser download.

Why can’t Tor Browser simply come to iOS?+

Does the EU allow a Tor Browser engine on iOS?+

Apple documents an EU-only entitlement path for alternative browser engines on iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 18. The policy has strict requirements, and it does not show that Tor Project has released an iOS Tor Browser.

Is Onion Browser as private as Tor Browser on desktop?+

No. It can connect to Tor, but Tor Project and independent reviews warn that WebKit and iOS limitations prevent the same level of protection and control as Tor Browser on other platforms.

Can I use Tor Browser on Android instead?+

Yes. Tor Project currently lists Android as an official Tor Browser platform. Download it from the official page or the store path linked by Tor Project, and follow its current safety guidance.

Is Tabbit an iOS Tor Browser alternative?+

No. Tabbit is an AI-native browser for macOS and Windows. It can help with research and repeatable web work, but it has no iOS app and does not provide Tor routing or anonymity.

Choose the next honest step

Use Tor for Tor. Use Tabbit for desktop AI work.

If you need Tor on iPhone, start with Tor Project’s guidance and evaluate Onion Browser with its WebKit limits in view. If your task is research, writing, or repeatable web work on a computer, Tabbit is the separate desktop path.
