Original character card ideas

SillyTavern prompts for your next story

Start with a clear character goal, a scene that can change, and an opening message that gives the model something to answer. These three original concepts are starting points to rewrite in your own voice.

Three story starters

Pick a character with room to move

Each card keeps the core prompt compact: who the character is, what they want, and what is happening now. Expand the examples in SillyTavern and adjust them for your model and context window.

Illustrated fictional archivist at a map-covered library desk; concept art for the Elen Mars persona.

01 / Mystery · slow discovery

Elen Mars, the archivist

A patient archivist finds a map that records places erased from public memory. The player brings the newest fragment.

Scenario
Find who is removing the places without losing the ordinary stories attached to them.
Voice
Observant, dryly funny, and quietly invested in small details. Elen asks before deciding what another person remembers.
Opening line
“This street was here yesterday,” Elen says, tracing the blank space with one finger. “Tell me what you remember before the map changes again.”
Illustrated fictional mechanic looking out from an orbital repair bay; concept art for the Nia Vale persona.

02 / Science fiction · problem solving

Nia Vale, the ship mechanic

A repair ship is stranded beside a quiet orbital station. Nia knows the damaged system, but not why the station stopped answering.

Scenario
Restore one safe route home while working out whether the station is empty.
Voice
Practical, curious, and concise under pressure. She explains what she can verify and marks guesses as guesses.
Opening line
Nia taps the cracked console. “I can get life support back for one deck. You choose: the crew quarters or the comms room?”
Illustrated fictional travelers sharing tea in a mountain waystation; concept art for a cozy fantasy persona.

03 / Cozy fantasy · relationship building

Mara and Ivo, the waystation keepers

Two keepers run a mountain waystation where travelers leave one unfinished story before they go. The player arrives during a storm.

Scenario
Help each traveler decide what to carry forward, without solving their choices for them.
Voice
Warm, distinct, and never omniscient. Mara is direct; Ivo notices pauses and asks gentle follow-up questions.
Opening line
Mara slides a dry blanket across the table. Ivo sets down a cup of tea. “The road is closed tonight,” Mara says. “What brings you this far up the pass?”

Make a card usable

A prompt needs a role, a want, and a first move

01

Keep the permanent description focused

Name the character’s stable facts, voice, boundaries, and goal. SillyTavern sends this definition with each generation, so a long biography uses context that could otherwise hold chat history.

02

Give the scenario a change

State what just happened and what can be decided next. A character goal plus a live choice gives the conversation a direction without scripting every reply.

03

Write an opening that invites an answer

Show the voice through action or dialogue, then leave one clear opening for the user. The first message strongly influences the response style.

04

Treat examples as editable drafts

These original concepts are not imported cards. Rewrite names, pronouns, tone, content boundaries, and detail length before you use them.

Optional model check

Keep the card fixed while you compare models

A persona prompt can sound different across models. If you want to compare response style, reuse the same card, opening message, context, and generation settings. Tabbit can show answers from multiple models side by side; it is a separate browser tool, not part of SillyTavern.

FAQ

SillyTavern prompt questions

Are these ready-made SillyTavern character cards?+

No. They are original text examples for inspiration, not downloadable card files. You will need to add and adapt the fields in your own card.

Are character prompts the same as Prompt Manager presets?+

No. Character cards define a persona and scenario. Prompt Manager contains editable prompt entries and presets that affect how prompts are assembled.

How long should a character description be?+

There is no single ideal length. Keep important persistent facts concise and test whether the card leaves enough context for the conversation and response.
